For those of you who don’t know, Dr. Richard Sandell is the head of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester. Referred to here as a ‘museums guru’, Richard focuses on work of social agency and inclusion in museums (see bio and selected bibliography here). He is also a thoroughly lovely man and was the supervisor on my Masters thesis. I don’t know who put the video up, but they obviously agree too.

Apparently, he is also a Taiwanese aboriginal percussion instrument player. Who knew?? I found this via Richard’s Twitter page.

New series on Museums in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

3SAT will be premiering a new series on museums starting with the Jewish Museum Berlin on 30th May. I know it’s not such an interesting tip for  non-German speakers or people who don’t live where 3SAT is shown, but it could say a lot about not only what is happening in the German speaking world, but also the differences between the three countries in focus.

The press information begins by saying:

In days gone by, museums were often boring, dusty temples to the muses that children had to endure with patience. Today however, museums attract large numbers of visitors with their news conceptual ideas of what a museum is. The new 3SAT series “Museums-Check” will be paying visits to particular museums in DE, AT and CH. Speaking to people and looking around, Markus Brock will introduce viewers to the museum: What is the architecture like? What makes the exhibitions so exciting? What educational programmes does the museums offer? What’s the shop like and is there a cafe with a pleasant atmosphere where people can refuel?

After the Jewish Museum, it then says that Markus Brock will be coming to Vienna to mooch around the Albertina. So it will be interesting whether he engages with matters relating to the background of the collections, including of course some tangled, dubious collecting policies way back when and the ongoing restitution claims that persist to this day (oooh, that reminds me of a video I want to post…)

So, suffice to say that I will be setting a reminder and reporting back, although I am in London next week, so I might have to suss my technological options for recording it.

The Wien Museum Director gives his “personal take” on the city he’s spent his life interpreting

In a recent interview with Director Wolfgang Kos in the Wien Museum – the museum of the history of the City of Vienna – one couldn’t help being curious about his personal take on the city he spends his life trying to interpret. A man who knows the city so well must have some favourite Vienna things.
